Small fonts are a conundrum. Once you go below the 9px mark, they tend to become unreadable. It’s at this point you need to call in the, um, “big” guns. Mini-pixel fonts. These handy and popular fonts have a variety of uses. They show up in Flash applications and various other webapps. Sadly, they are under-used throughout the rest of the web world. There is no denying these teeny fonts have an understated air of elegance about them, so why not break them out more?

They can also be a pain to find. Not all font collections include mini-pixel fonts in a blatant act of prejudiced against the vertically challenged. Little fonts big world, people. So we figured we’d do the sleuthing for you and collect them all here, for your perusal. Consider yourself covered whenever you need one of these fonts for a flash app or even a really teeny letter. Each entry includes the size and a sample of the font. Enjoy.

What’s the point of search engine friendly navigation? To build a solid foundation in your site architecture of course. You don’t want users having to poke around like a hardware store from the 50s. But what does it mean exactly, and more importantly, what recommendations can you make to enhance the SEO of yourself and your clients?

Follow us on a magic carpet ride of SEO splendor as we look at some positive examples of search engine friendly navigation and talk about what these examples mean for you and your business.

Technically speaking

What makes for a spider friendly navigation? This is an out of the box CMS world we live in nowadays, so most navigation is already fairly SEO friendly. However, you can still run into absolute messes that need navigational clean-up and occasionally just need to be started again from scratch.

If you are reviewing a website that you think could be an SEO car-crash waiting to happen, here are some signs to look out for.

* The drop downs don’t work with Javascript disabled.

* Global and header links appear as images and not text.

* Tons of internal links disappear when you browse the site with JavaScript and CSS disabled.

* Any SEO-enabled toolbar you have installed report a lower than expected number of internal, followed links.

* The text-only version of your page that Google has on cache also shows the lack of internal links.

Search engine friendly navigation is a rather simple process. It requires only properly structured HTML, along with some CSS for all of the fancier bits. If you want to get technical for a second, if you are specifying a new navigation for your website, you should be asking for a “cross-browser drop-down cascading validating menu.”

HTML is simple, once you get the hang of it. Otherwise, you should be looking out for an unordered list of links in the text-only/Javascript and CSS disabled view of your page. It will look something like this.

About

History

Team

USA

Australia

For some fantastic examples, you should bookmark CSSplay.co.uk’s CSS menus page. And while we are at it, here is another great real-world example. Also, since I have your attention, take a look at this site with JavaScript and CSS disabled in Web Developer Toolbar:

There are so many other examples out there, and once you get more of a grasp of what to look for you won’t be able to help noticing good and and examples as you peruse the Web. If you have some good examples of search engine friendly navigation, don’t hesitate to drop us a line via email or the comment box.

Those new to the wonders of Photoshop absolutely fall in love with the handy, dandy Clonestamp tool. And why shouldn’t they? It’s simply a blast to remove people from photographs, fixing up damaged photographs or just having a grand old time adding bits and filling things in. In short, the Clone tool is an amazing tool to have for Photoshop newbies and veterans alike. It’s also fantastic for retouchers. So, how does this thing work?

The Clone Stamp tool samples pixels from one area of an image and copies them to another part of the image. You use your brush to actually “paint” areas using another area you have set to be “cloned.” The tool allows usage of any brush tip or shape, which allows for very precise control over both manipulated areas. You can also sample from one image and apply the clone in another image, so long as both reside in the same color mode.

Look at the sample image below. We are going to remove the butterfly from the background. The results will be the same with any image and object you choose.

1. Open up your image in Photoshop.

2. Select the Clone Stamp tool ().

3. On the tool options bar, open the Brush pop-up palette and select a medium-sized brush with a medium-soft edge. For this example, we’ll set the brush diameter to 200 pixels and the hardness to 50%. It’s a good idea to use a soft-edge brush, otherwise you will see a very hard line where the cloning takes place. You want it to seem as natural as possible, after all.

4. Make sure that the Aligned option is selected.

Now set a sample point in the area you want to duplicate and clone to the next area. When you select Aligned in the options bar, it means you will reuse the most current sampling point no matter how often you stop and resume painting. This is important because if it is not checked, then you’ll end up reusing the same pixels every time you paint.

5. Move the Clone Stamp tool pointer to the dark area on the left side of the butterfly. Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) and the pointer becomes a set of cross-hairs. Click once to set that point as your sampling point. Release the Alt or Option key. Easy peasy.

6. Click and drag the Clone Stamp tool over a small area of the butterfly’s wing. As you drag the cursor, the wing will start to disappear as it is replaced with the pixels you’re sampling from. The cross-hairs that appear to the right of the Clone Stamp tool indicate the source area of the image that you are replicating as you drag. It may sound complicated but once you get to this step it will make perfect sense.

7. Release the mouse button and move the pointer to another part of the butterfly wing. The cross-hairs will maintain the same spatial relationship to the Clone Stamp tool pointer that it had when you made the first stroke. This is the beauty of clicking on the aligned option at the beginning of the process. You did do that, right?

8. You can reset the sample area anytime by performing this procedure. Simply hold down the Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) key and click once. You will need to do this several times to completely remove the butterfly. Don’t forget to re-size your brush as you go. Keep cloning until you have removed the side of the butterfly on the dark side of the moon tar macadam.

9. Reset the sample point and do the same thing as before on the white side until you have cloned “out” the rest of the butterfly. To finish the area where the butterfly sat, take samples above and below.

That’s it! Not so hard right? Don’t be afraid to keep re-sampling as you go on. And don’t worry. As you clone more and more, the shortcuts will begin to become second nature. Eventually it will be like riding a bike. Below, feast your eyes on the finished product.

Usability and the utility, not the visual design, determine the success or failure of a web-site. Since it’s your visitors who will be trying and viewing everything you lay out, it makes maximizing their experience your ultimate goal. User-centric design has become a standard approach for successful and profit-oriented web design. No matter how pretty things look, if the usability isn’t there, it may as well not exist.

With that said, let’s get into ten effective principals of web design.

Principles Of Effective Web Design

1. Don’t make users think

According to Krug’s first law of usability, the web-page should be obvious and self-explanatory. It’s your job to know any questions users may have and answer them before they are posed. Otherwise your site could alienate people. After all, why would they take the time to email you a question when they could just find another website that works?

The key here is intuitive navigating. Leave nothing to chance and make things as simple and streamlined as possible.

Let’s take a look at the above example. Beyondis.co.uk claims to be “beyond channels, beyond products, beyond distribution”. What does that even mean though? Since users tend to explore web-sites according to the “F”-pattern, these three statements would be the first things users see upon entering the page.

Although the design itself is simple enough, to understand what the page is about the user needs to search for the answer. This is an unnecessary question mark. It’s designer’s task to make sure that the number of question marks is close to 0. There is a visual explanation to the right but even that doesn’t make all that much sense. Note, you probably hadn’t heard of this website before this article. There is a reason for that.

ExpressionEngine uses the very same structure to Beyondis, but avoids those unnecessary question marks. The slogan also becomes functional as users are provided with options to try the service and download the free version. Not bad.

2. Don’t squander the patience of your users

This one is tied closely to the former. Any number of things can squander the patience of your users, be it cluttery design or popups. Also, try to keep your user requirements minimal. The less action is required from users to test a service, the more likely a random visitor is to actually try it out. Users want to test out your service, not fill out long webforms. Those are annoying. It’s not reasonable to force users to enter an email address to test the feature. After all, you want them coming back of their own accord.

As Ryan Singer — the developer of the 37Signals team — states, users would probably be eager to provide an email address if they were asked for it after they’d seen your features at work. They need to have some kind of an idea what they’ll be getting in return for your private information.

Stikkit is a perfect example for a user-friendly service which requires almost nothing from the visitor. This is rather unobtrusive and comforting. Exactly how you want your users to feel on your web site.

The site above didn’t get the memo. Although it takes only thirty seconds to fill out, that’s thirty seconds that could be used to surf to another site. Remember that.

3. Manage to focus the attention of your users

As web-sites provide both static and dynamic content, some aspects of the interface attract more attention than others. For instance, images are more eye-catching than text(On average.) Corollary, bold sentences catch more attention than plain text.

The human eye is an interesting beast and tends to notice patterns of movement. This is why video-based advertisements are extremely annoying and distracting, however they do capture attention. This is why marketers love them.

Humanized.com perfectly uses the principle of focus. Look at how the word “free” sticks out like a beautiful sore thumb. This directs users to a “free” service which will hopefully leading them to purchase the “not free” service.

4. Strive for feature exposure

Modern web sites are usually criticized for holding the user’s hands too often. Simple 1-2-3 directions, large buttons, you know what we mean. However, why is this a bad thing? Whatever gets them to the end goal, right?

Dibusoft.com combines visual appeal with clear site structure. Notice the nine simple to read site navigations.

Let the users see what is available to click on. It doesn’t really matter how this is achieved. It matters that the content is fully understood within a second. Remember the zero questions formula from earlier. If this means a little hand holding, so be it. It’s the Internet, not college.

5. Make use of effective writing

As the Web is different from print, it is a must to adjust writing habits to match your users. Promotional writing won’t be read. Long text blocks without images and keywords marked in bold or italics will be skipped. Exaggerated language just may be ignored. Hey wait! That’s no fun.

Talk business. Avoid cute or clever names, marketing-induced names, company-specific names, and unfamiliar technical names. For instance, if you describe a service and want users to create an account, “sign up” is better than “start now!” which is again better than “explore our services”. Just keep things simple. Don’t over “cute” it and you’ll be fine.

Eleven2.com gets directly to the point. No cute words, no exaggerated statements. Instead they just throw the price right there in the middle of the screen. What else do you need to know?

6. Strive for simplicity

Keep it simple. Keep it simple. Keep it simple. Users are rarely on a site to enjoy the design. They are usually suffering through the design in order to find some information. Remember that in all facets of web design.

Crcbus provides visitors with a clean and simple design. It’s in Italian, so that’s a slight problem for this example, but be assured, the information is presented accurately and simply. No hunting around for peculiar links here. That should be your goal as well.

Here is another good example:

Finch clearly presents information without overcrowding or making users squint their eyes in frustration. Strive for this goal.

7. Don’t be afraid of the white space

It’s really difficult to overestimate the importance of white space. It helps reduce cognitive load, and makes it possible to perceive whatever information you place on the screen. When a new visitor approaches a design layout, the first thing he/she tries to do is to scan the page and divide the content area into digestible pieces of information. White space helps them do just that. Maybe your tenth grade art teacher was right after all.

Complex structures are harder to read, scan, analyze and work with. If you have the choice between separating two design segments by a visible line or by some whitespace, go with the white space.

Cameron.io uses white space as a primary design element. The result is a well-scannable layout which places the content front and center. This is always a good thing.

8. Communicate effectively with a “visible language”

In a renowned paper on visual communication, Aaron Marcus states three fundamental principles involved in the use of that mythical “visible language”

Organize: provide the user with a clear and consistent conceptual structure. Consistency, screen layout, relationships and navigability are important concepts of organization. The same conventions and rules should be applied to all elements.

Economize: do the most with the least amount of cues and visual elements. Four major points to be considered: simplicity, clarity, distinctiveness, and emphasis. Simplicity includes only the elements that are most important for communication. Clarity: all components should be designed so their meaning is not ambiguous. Distinctiveness: the important properties of the necessary elements should be distinguishable. Emphasis: the most important elements should be easily perceived.

Communicate: match the presentation to the capabilities of the user. The user interface must keep in balance legibility, readability, typography, symbolism, multiple views, and color or texture in order to communicate successfully.

9. Conventional design is ok

Conventional design does not always mean boring design. In fact, conventions are useful. They reduce the learning curve to figure out how things work because your users has seen it all before. For instance, it would be a usability nightmare if all web-sites had different visual presentation of RSS-feeds. The brain gravitates toward the familiar.

With conventions you can gain confidence, trust, reliability and prove some credibility. See Nielsen’s Usability Alertbox for more information.

Look at the above example. It’s Amazon. You know where to click. You know what buttons do what. Now look again. It’s in Russian. The thing is, that doesn’t matter. You can still navigate the site. That’s perfect conventional web design.

10. Test early, test often

This principal should be applied to every web design project. Usability tests tend to provide crucial insight that nothing else seems to catch, until it’s too late. You don’t want your users catching the mistakes.

Some important points to keep in mind:

Testing one user is better than testing none. Do whatever you can.

if you find a mistake, fix it, then test again.

Even if nothing is wrong, the results are usable. You know what to do now.

If you can afford it, or if you know anybody, independent testers can be an invaluable tool.

MooTools, contrary to popular belief, is still running strong. I know it seems as though jQuery rules the world with an iron and unflinching fist, but the little engine that could still gets a lot of foot traffic. jQuery may be the most popular Javascript framework, but MooTools is the “cool” cousin who listens to the Velvet Underground. It offers a ton of functionality and can bed dropped into any website with ease. MooTools also has tons of plugins and tutorials up for grabs. Below are fifty of the best ones out there. Enjoy.

Your logo and/or brand is important. You know that of course but sometimes it’s good to remember just how important they are. Logos need to be memorable and, at the same time, reflect what you are about. If you are a graphic designer, receiving logo-making instructions from a client can sometimes wander into the realm of the confusing. After all, your client has some idea what they want, but they aren’t a designer. How many times have you heard ‘Well, we want it to be colorful, and we want it to pop. Can it also be warm?” To keep things short, you need all of the help you can get. Here are a batch of innovative logos and tutorials that will help you keep your clients, and yourself, happy. Now get on your copy of Adobe Illustrator and get cracking.

What is this Liferay you’ve no doubt been hearing about from colleagues/friends/acquaintances/even a few enemies? Yet another confusing Internet platform to make life and business more difficult? Don’t worry. It’s not that bad. Webrulon is here to give you the lowdown on Liferay and what it can do for you and your business. And we’ll do it in baby steps.

Liferay is not the comic book opposite of a death ray, although that would be very cool. No, Liferay is an “Enterprise web platform for building business solutions that deliver immediate results and long-term value.” What does that mean? It’s a suite of programs designed to help you market and maintain your business.

Think of it this way. Think of a website like Kraft.com or even Youtube.com. Wow. They have some cool things there. Where would a smaller business even start to approach that level of big money functionality? That’s where Liferay comes in. Think of it as a shell, an outer casing that, by adding and deleting functions, you can shape to your liking, to give your web and online business presence any amount of luster you desire.

Here are some of the services Liferay offers:

Self-Service Portals

Knowledge Sharing Workspaces

Dynamic Web 2.0 Websites

Revenue-generating Social Networks

Enterprise Application Integration

Pretty much anything you see on an established website, you can do here. Think of it as your very own Internet sandbox. Only instead of sand castles, you’ll be building increased profit margins and sustainability. The company vows it will run with your current infrastructure and, best of all, Liferay is open source.

Open source – Open source is a new-fangled web term that essentially means you can do whatever you want with it. More PC. Less Apple. You can tinker, get in to the source code and do what you want legally and easily. “But I can’t program” you say. Well, the good thing about open source software isn’t that you are tinkering with it. It’s that everyone else is. Open source software is sure to attain more functionality than it’s closed counterparts simply because the whole world is in there with their virtual screw drivers, trying new things, tooling around. Sometimes the stuff garden variety consumers come up with is ten thousand times more imaginative and useful than what big companies cook up. In short, open source is good and Liferay has it.

What else does Liferay bring to the table?

Highly scalable, supporting more than 3,300 concurrent transactions per server

Real-world performance of millions of page views and 1.3 million users

Clusterable configuration for high availability

Implements top ten OWASP-recommended security practices

Options for Terracotta, Oracle RAC, and other scalability solutions

Deployable to the Cloud and available as SaaS

Runs PHP, Ruby, Python, Grails and other lightweight scripting technologies within a robust Java framework

The pricing is scalable depending on your needs and your installed customer base. Fill out the form here to get a quote. Put your browser here to download a free demo. It should give you enough of an idea as to whether or not this is the right direction to take your company’s web presence . Also, just to be sure, click here to look over the tech specs to see if you can handle it. Don’t worry. You probably will be fine. Only games cause you to need hardware upgrades.

If you are looking for Liferay Hosting, webRulon offers various Liferay Hosting Plans which can help you easily start to take advantage of all that Liferay has to offer.

Give it some thought. And in the meantime, here are a few sites built using the service to give you an idea of what it can do for you:

Autozone

Fox Network (Germany)
