Welcome to our first annual list of the top viral videos of the year. It wasn’ t so long ago when we’d have to rely on television for entertainment. Thank God that’s over. Now we can geek out with our friends and family to whatever suits our fancy in real time. And geek out we do. Here is our list of the top viral videos of the year that was, 2009:

1.Keyboard cat- You know it’s hard to believe it was still 2009 when this video took the world by storm and spawned countless imitations. It’s a simple video, really. There’s a cat. He plays a catchy song on the keyboard. Hey, viral videos don’t have to be Dostoyevsky, ok?

2. Susan Boyle sings an inspiring song – Everyone expected to laugh her off the stage, after all, that seems to be the point of reality television nowadays. Well she blew the pants off of everyone and is now a bona-fide star. Even if you think those kind of vocal showtunes are stupid, you can’t help but be touched by her beautiful voice. Shine on you crazy diamond!

3.The Muppets do “Bohemian Rhapsody” – This video intersects two types of people that have never crossed paths before: Namely Muppets fans and Queen fans. Well, maybe they’ve met at the supermarket or something. This video is simply hilarious and so well done. Stick around for Kermit at the end. It’s worth it.

4.Surprised kitten makes entire world go “awww” – What can be said about this video? Your girlfriend loves it. Your mom loves it. Heck, you love it. It’s the world’s cutest kitten who is constantly surprised by the same thing over and over. Don’t we all wish life could be as consistently new and fresh as it is for that feisty feline? Ok, maybe it’s just me. Don’t ever get jaded, kitten!

5.David gets drugs at the dentist, dad hilariously films it – A lot of people were actually up in arms over this video, in which a dad films his drugged out kid on the way home from the dentist’s office. But come on, it’s just a dad filming a funny moment in his son’s life for posterity! It’s not like he’s trying to make money off of it or anything. Wait, a minute. The dad set up a website to sell a bunch of stuff?! Well, if you can’t use your kids to make you a few bucks then what good are they?

6.Miley Cyrus quits Twitter, makes song about it - Pop star Miley Cyrus quit Twitter and let the world know via the only way she knows how, with a song and dance number. As much as celebrities and Twitter tend to leave a bad taste in many people’s mouths, this video is actually kind of cute. Doesn’t it remind you of the kind of stuff you did as a kid? I mean, not that the Internet was around back then, right geezers?

7.Five year old can play ukulele better than you – This kid is amazing! He’s five years old and he certainly can play better than that guy at that party you went to who insisted the whole party stopped while he played some Jack Johnson song for fifteen minutes. God, that guy was annoying. This kid, on the other hand, is amazing!

8. History of social media is informative and entertaining – Wait a second. How did something educational make this list? This informative history of social media tackles the question as to whether the social media trend is a fad or bigger than the industrial revolution. Spoiler alert: It’s the latter.
